Need for Businesses to Focus on Safety of Drivers
Thursday, July 30th, 2009The Director of Market Insight at Arval, has said that the businesses need to focus on the safety of drivers as driving is one of the most hazardous professions among the various jobs performed by employees. This makes it mandatory that the employers provide the necessary equipment to decrease the chances of any unfortunate incident when the workers are driving.
The employers not only have a moral duty, but commercial prudence too dictates that businesses should provide safety training to their drivers as it reduces the costs involved. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) has released statistics, which show that a loss of close to three billion dollars is caused to the economy due to road accidents.
However, the task of providing safety training might prove difficult for the businesses. Corporate Vehicle Observatory, backed by Arval, has done a research in 12 countries, including the UK. The research question was whether the drivers will be willing to undergo road safety training.
Around one tenth of the responses were emphatically negative. Around one-third said that the chances of the drivers taking the training are low. Just around one-fifth of the fleet managers felt that the drivers would certainly accept road safety training.
In Europe, around thirty five per cent fleet managers said no to the idea, while in the UK, forty per cent shared that view. In case of the bigger companies, that is, companies with more than one thousand employees, the negative responses were one-fourth of the total responses while in companies with 10-99 employees, the figure was slightly more than forty per cent. Even in case of energy efficiency training, more than one half of the fleet managers said that their drivers would not like to undergo it. This indicates that the drivers are not interested in any sort of training at all.
